The Ashanti Class impulse turbine, is a geared system, where blades attached to a ring gear are driven by the force of water impacting the blade surface. The power is transmitted through fixed planetary gears to drive a sun gear attached to the shaft. The gear ratio is 60:1. With a water current velocity of 5 m/sec, design A could produce energy at a rate of up to 1 MW. |
